The following article was found in the January 6, 1944, Lowell Tribune on page 2, column 2:
Pfc. Ethel Adams, a member of the WAC, stationed at Newport News, Va., and Sgt. Herbert Lamphier of Camp Cook, Calif., have been visiting her sister, Mrs. Sanford Bales and family. Pfc. Charles L. Swisher of the Marine corps, stationed at Great Lakes, Ill., spent the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bales. Pfc. Swisher, who was wounded in the back and leg in action, was awarded the Purple Heart and Presidential Citation. He saw action in Guadalcanal, Wallace Island, and Tulagi.
