This unidentified newspaper article was found in the local history clipping files at the Lowell Public Library:
In some unaccountable manner the brick school house on the east side of Cedar Lake, known as the Binyon School, caught fire last Friday afternoon and before it could be controlled [it] burned. The fire was first discovered in the roof of the building and at that time had such a start that it was impossible to do anything further than save part of the contents. We understand that the loss was partially covered by insurance. The building was a good one and probably would cost $50,000 to replace it at the present time. It is the intention of the trustee of Center township to abandon this school after this year as it had outgrown the community and an addition will be added to the Lew Wallace School north of Cedar Lake and the Cedar Lake pupils will be hauled to that school.
