from the Lowell Tribune, March 9, 1961, page 1: Zay Moyer Dies in Train-Auto Crash Heavy fog and mist was blamed for the death Saturday March 4 of Zay Moyer, 62, who suffered a fatal skull fracture when his auto was hit by a freight train near Schneider. He was dead on arrival at St. Margaret's hospital, Hammond. The officials said Moyer was driving south on the road and swung across the tracks in front of the westbound train in the fog. The road runs parallel to the railroad tracks near the crossing then swings abruptly over them. According to state police, Moyer made a left hand turn directly into the path of the train and his car was hit on the side. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. March 5 in the Sheets Funeral Home with the Rev. E. L. Worley officiating and burial was in Lowell cemetery. The son of George Oren and Louetta (Clark) Moyer, Zay was born in Lowell, Oct. 24, 1896. He was one of 12 children. His parents, two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death. Moyer served with the U.S. Army from Sept. 1918 until Feb. 1919. Survivors include his sisters, Mrs. Opal Mears of Hammond, and Mrs. Ida Hasler of Elkhart; three brothers, Arthur of Elkhart; Jim of Oak Forest, Ill.; and Bert of Lowell; also many other relatives and friends.
