William D. Finnerty

Former Resident Dead

The funeral of Wm. D. Finnerty was held at 2:30 Friday afternoon from the Milts chapel, the G.A.R. officiating. Death had occurred the day before. He expired while sitting in his chair just after eating his dinner. It may be that he was overcome with the heat, as that day was the hottest that there had been this year up to that time. He had been thrown from a horse a month or more before and had not fully recovered. Old age was the principal cause of death. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery.

Wm. D. Finnerty was born in Mr. Vernon, Ohio. December 13, 1833. He enlisted August 6, 1862, in Co. K, 113th Illinois regiment and served until the end of the war. He participated in the campaign about Vicksburg. He moved to Oregon in 1884, lived six years at Medford and then moved to Cottage Grove. A brother and sister in Ohio, a wife and three children survive. The children are M.M. Finnerty, Newport; Mrs. B.E. Burrows, Cottage Grove; and G.E. Mr. Finnerty formerly lived on a farm about a mile south of Sherburnville and moved from here to Oregon about thirty years ago. His wife was the daughter of the late Vol Dickey. He enlisted in the same company and regiment as James Kelsey and Cyrus Hayden. He is remembered by many of our older citizens.
