At the age of 19 years he enlisted in Co. H, 9th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry at Valparaiso. He was engaged at Chickamauga, Stone River, Nashville, Mission Ridge, Franklin and many others. He rose from the rank of private to sergeant and was honorably discharged Sept. 28, 1865, as a veteran.
On returning home he engaged in farming and on November 5, 1868, he was married to Hannah Carson, a native of Ohio, born in 1843 and a daughter of Matthew and Margaret Carson, both natives of Ireland. She preceded in death Feb. 4, 1925.
He was a member of and one of the organizers of the Methodist church at Leroy and served as one of the trustees for many years.
He departed this life March 10, 1926, at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 26 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure four children -- Mrs. Addie M. Love, Alvah H. Gibbs, Mrs. Maude A. Henderson, Mrs. Mabel G. Nethery, all residing in the neighborhood of Leroy.
The funeral was held at Leroy Methodist church Saturday at 2 o'clock. Rev. C.A. Brown, pastor of the Lowell Methodist church, preached the sermon. Rev. Selle, pastor of the Leroy church, assisted in the services. A male quartette sang two beautiful selections. Interment was made in Salem cemetery.
