A copy of the following unidentified newspaper obituary was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
At Hammond, Indiana, Oct. 27th, 1894, Thompson Handley, brother of G.B. Handley, of Crown Point. Deceased had been a resident of Lake County the most of the time since July 4th, 1859, when he came with his parents and five brothers and one sister from Knox County, Ohio, and settled on a farm at Orchard Grove, Lake County, Ind. Deceased was born in Richland County, Ohio, May 25, 1833, making his age 61 years, 5 months, and 4 days. Was married April 10, 1860, to Miss Emily Spalding, by whom they had three children, two daughters and one son, who were all permitted to be with him in his last hours of affliction and death and they, with the wife and mother are left to mourn the loss of husband and father. The daughters are well known throughout the county, as Alice and Bird Handley. Both are married to good businessmen, Alice living in the city of Chicago, and Bird in Mansfield, Ohio.
