Mary E. Edmonds Hayden (1854-1918)
(Mrs. Wallace L. Hayden)
A copy of the following undated newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Mary E. Edmonds*, daughter of Melvin E. and Sarah Edmonds, was born in West Creek Township, Lake County, Indiana, February 14, 1854, and died at her home in Lowell, April 29*, 1918, aged 64 years, 2 months, and 16 days.
She was married to Wallace B. Hayden, February 21, 1873. To this union were born four children, three sons, Herman, Earl and Nelson, and one daughter, Ruby, now Mrs. Gordon.
She united with the M.E. Church at Sherburnville, Ill., in 1888, and has followed the pathway of righteousness ever since as has been demonstrated in her every day life. She was not only a mother to her little flock, but a motherly interest and care over the entire community in which she lived, being ever ready to administer deeds of kindness and words of comfort and cheer to those in distress.
She leaves to mourn their loss a husband, three sons, one daughter, thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. C.N. Morgan, Mrs. Wm. Hayden, and one brother, Eli Edmonds, together with a host of admiring friends.
The funeral was held at the home Friday afternoon at 1:30 and was attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends who gathered to pay their last respects to a woman they had loved and respected in life. Rev. C.A. Brown, pastor of the Lowell M.E. Church, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was made in the West Creek cemetery. Undertaker Weaver had charge of the burial service. The following nephews acted as pall bearers: Bert D. Hayden, Calvin Love, Jodie Hayden, Roy Pattee, Minor Collins and Milton Hayden. The bereaved family has the sympathy of their friends in their great sorrow.
-- The Hayden Reunion Scrapbook, a hand-written document, also lists Mary Hayden's maiden name as "Edmonds," but the West Creek Cemetery record at the library lists it as "Edmond."
-- The Hayden Reunion Scrapbook lists Mary Hayden's death date as Apr. 30, 1918, rather than as Apr. 29, which appears in this obitualy..
The Lowell Public Library copy of the West Creek Cemetery Index shows Mary E. Hayden (1854-1918) buried in row S13. She is next to her parents, Melvin (died 9-01-1875, age 63 y, 4m, 6d) and Sarah Edmond (died 4-10-1902, age 85 years) and her husband Wallace L. Hayden (1851-1923). Note that her parents' last name does not have the "s" at the end in this document, and her husband's middle initial appears an "L" rather than "B."
