The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
DROWNED
B.P. Hayhurst has been for some time working, as a tenant, M.J. Sheridan's farm on Bull Creek. Last Sunday in the afternoon Mr. Sheridan drove up in his buggy to see Mr. Hayhurst. When he got to the Bull Creek ford, near the house, he found the water too high to ford. So Hayhurst and his son, 7 years old, came out to talk with him. They got into a small skiff and both standing up undertook to pole across. But the wind, which was blowing a hurricane just then, was too much for them and they were soon both in the water. The boy got across but seeing his father in difficulty went back after him. The boy was soon in a drowning condition himself. Sheridan, who is no swimmer, waded in as far as he could and succeeded in helping the boy out, but the father was drowned. Sheridan, when they first started, hallooed to them to go back but before he could repeat the warning, the skiff capsized. Mr. Hayhurst is a son of Dr. Wm. Hayhurst and leaves a wife and family.
The body was recovered about 10 o'clock the following day. It was found near the place where it went down. The coroner came up and held an inquest on Tuesday, and the burial took place that afternoon.
