The badge shows a miniature Revolutionary War flintlock rifle mounted against a blue rectangle. A silver wreath extends across the bottom and up the sides of the badge.
The 40th, from Southern California, was the first National Guard division to arrive overseas after the start of the Korean War. The unit trained for 16 months in Japan before it was committed to Korea in January.
Pvt. Kazen is a member of Company K in the 160th Infantry Regiment.
