"Many of them looked as if they were scared to death," said Marine Pfc. Lloyd Eugene Korth, age 19, who is convalescing here from a knee injury suffered on Bougainville last November. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Korth, who live at Roselawn in Newton county.
"After we had finished bombarding the Japs," Korth said, "we would go out to make counts to see how effective our fire was. I remember one day after a bombardment, we counted 245 dead Japs. They were huddled in foxholes and in any other places where they thought they could escape our fire. It seemed a bit odd to see so many of them with their faces covered with their hands when death overtook them."
