Mr. and Mrs. Kretz were celebrating the 50th anniversary of their wedding day and together with their children and families had attended an 8 a.m. anniversary High mass at which Father E.M. Boney officiated at St. Edward's church. The group had gathered in the home of the celebrants' daughter and family, the Harry Asches at Brunswick, for a festive dinner when Mr. Kretz was seized, and he died very suddenly.
Mr. Kretz was born April 11, 1878 at Cook, the son of Phillip and Cecelia (Gerold) Kretz. On Nov. 28, 1905, he was married to Miss Susan Schmidt in a formal ceremony solemnized by Father Matthias Zumbuelte at Holy Name church in Cook. The couple farmed in the Lowell community until Mr. Kretz retired and they moved in town.
Surviving with his wife, Susan, are two sons, Phillip and John, and three daughter, Mrs. Henry (Magdalene) Schutz, Mrs. Harry (Cecelia) Asche, Mrs. Lawrence (Catherine) Nolan, all of this community; one brother, Valentine Kretz of Lowell, and five sisters, Miss Mary Kretz of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Frank Govert of St. John, Mrs. Anna Diettrich and Mrs. Matilda Belindeaur of Chicago, Mrs. Veronica Hughes of Calif; also 19 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Members of St. Edward's Holy Name Society gathered at the Sheets Funeral Home Tuesday evening to pray the Rosary.
Father Edward Boney officiated at the 10 o'clock Requiem Mass on Wednesday morning, November 30, and he was laid to rest in St. Edward's cemetery.
