CHARLES MARVIN
Mr. Marvin died June 16, 1892, at 2:55 p.m. Mr. Marvin was born at Norwalk*, Conn., August 8*, 1811. His first remove as a young man was to Georgetown, S.C., remaining there six months, thence a short sojourn at New Orleans, and not feeling satisfied with Southern climes, he went to Alton, Ill., and after an interval of a few months, made his way to friends, an only brother and sister, at Lockport, Ill., in 1833. Then began his life as a tiller of the soil. Working with his brother and brother-in-law, a Mr. Comstock Hanford, remaining there about three years. In 1836 he came to West Creek, Ind., taking steps to secure his first government claim, located north of Brunswick, Ind., known in later years as the Sasse farm. He was married to Charlotte Perry in 1835. He remained on that farm about three years then sold his claim and began again six miles south in the town of West Creek, Ind. About that time he buried his first wife; not discouraged, he secured the title to his recent claim that is known so widely to his friends and neighbors as his home [for] so long. In 1882 he sold said house to Bernard Berg and the same year came to the house in which he died, making that his home until loving hearts and willing hands performed the last sad rites. During his last illness, neighbors and friends far and near did all within their power to cheer his life. A large concourse gathered at his funeral, and followed his body in sad procession railroad to the station whence it was taken to its place of burial, near Lockport, Ill. His second wife who for many years faithfully shared his labors, joys and sorrows, who with unwearied fidelity ministered to him in all of his weakness as only a loving wife can do survives him alone to bear her burden until the Master shall call her to her heavenly home.
* NOTE -- Although this obituary places Charles Marvin's place of birth as Norwalk, CT, and his birth date as Aug. 8, 1811, a May 1981 "Pioneer History" column lists his birthdate and place as Aug. 4, 1811, at Norwich, CT.
