Dr. Onis O. Melton, 59, a resident of Lowell the past five years, passed away at his home here Sunday night, following a hear attack. He had been suffering ill health for several years.
Dr. Melton, who practiced in Hammond as a physician and surgeon for 25 years before his own health failed, was well known over Lake county. He cared for many of his former patients since moving here, but his practice was limited because of his health.
Formerly a member of McKinley Masonic Lodge at Hammond, Dr. Melton transferred his membership to Colfax lodge here when he came to Lowell. He took his Masonic degree in Williamsport, Ind., his former home prior to locating in Lake county. He was also a member of the Fort Wayne Consistory.
He is survived by his widow and one son, Sgt. Onis Melton, Jr., a member of the medical corps, stationed in Hawaii, and one grandson.
Funeral services were held at he Sheets funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Edward M. Boney, pastor of St. Edward's Catholic church. Lowell Post 101, American Legion, of which Dr. Melton was a member, conducted the Legion service. Following the funeral services, the remains were taken to Oakwoods cemetery in Chicago for cremation.
