Gerald Miller on Way Overseas
Gerald Miller, son of the Eldon Millers is on his way overseas. Writing to his parents while still on the transport, Gerald said he had finally overcome his seasickness and was enjoying the trip. Of the many fish he had seen thus far, he thought the flying fish were the most interesting.
This March 11, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Serving Somewhere in Pacific
A letter received by the Eldon Millers from their son, 3rd class Petty Officer Gerald Miller, who is aboard ship somewhere in the Pacific, says that everything is going along as usual and that he is O.K.
The following Sept. 14, 1944, Lowell Tribune information was found on page 4 column 2:
Gerald E. Miller, F.C. 3/c, returned to San Francisco, Calif., after spending two weeks here visiting his parents, the Eldon Millers. Gerald has served 21 months in the south Pacific. He will return to his ship and after repairs are made, will again go to the south Pacific.
A February 8, 1945, Lowell Tribune article about Glen E. Miller had this to say about his brother Gerald:
The Millers' other son, Gerald, F.c. 3/c, is still stationed on Treasure Island, California, as far as is known, where he is awaiting assignment to duty in the Pacific.
This March 8, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 6, column 3:
GERALD MILLER, F 1/c, MARRIED FEBRUARY 24
Word has been received by the Eldon Millers that their eldest son, Gerald, who is with the U.S. navy, was married in San Francisco on Feb. 24th, at 8 p.m. The ceremony was performed in the oldest Protestant church in California, founded in 1849, amid beautiful flowers, and organ music which made a perfect setting. Mr. and Mrs. Hoppes, long-time friends of the bride, were the attendants.
Following the ceremonies the wedding party had dinner in a fashionable theater in the International Settlement. The following evening Mr. and Mrs. Hoppes gave them a reception in their home and all of Gerald's crew were present in addition to many other friends.
Gerald is a graduate of Lowell high school and also attended Gallagher business school in Kankakee, later working in the Lowell National bank, where he made a host of friends. He enlisted in the navy in April, 1942, and spent 21 months in the South Pacific.
The couple left the followeing week for Seattle, Wash., where Gerald is to be stationed for a while. Later he will go to San Diego for final training before going out to sea again.
The bride works for Western Unioin and will remain in San Francisco until Gerald's return.
This October 25, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 3:
Word received by the Eldon Millers tells them their son, Gerald, has received his discharge from the navy. He expects to remain in California for the present.
This December 20, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 6:
In a recent letter from Gerald, eldest son of the Eldon Millers, he wrote he had accepted a position with one of the largest banks in the world, in San Bernardino, Calif. Gerald served three and a half years in the U.S. Navy, twenty-six months of that being in the South Pacific. He received his discharge on Oct. 13th and he and his wife are nicely settled at 3365 June St., San Bernardino, Calif. They sent Holiday Greetings to their many, many friends here at home.
This March 14, 1946, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 3:
The Eldon Millers and daughter, Margery, had a most pleasant trip to San Bernardino, California, this past month. There they visited their son and brother, Gerald and wife. Glen, A.M.M. 3/c, rated two week ends at the time and all enjoyed a most happy time. Many interesting places were seen including the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 2, 1947, issue:
In a recent letter to his folks, the Eldon Millers, Gerald wrote of receiving a decoration from the war department for outstanding heroism during the battle of the Empress, Augusta Bay on Nov. 1st and 2nd of 1943. Gerald served nearly four years in the U.S. Navy and spent several months in the South Pacific.
