This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 2, 1947, issue: In a recent letter to his folks, the Eldon Millers, Gerald wrote of receiving a decoration from the war department for outstanding heroism during the battle of the Empress, Augusta Bay on Nov. 1st and 2nd of 1943. Gerald served nearly four years in the U.S. Navy and spent several months in the South Pacific.
