They bought two acres from Ernie Surprise and decided to settle at Lake Dale. The land at that time was an oat field. They planted trees, shrubs, lawn, and a lovely garden.
The Petersons were both born in Hudiksvall, Sweden. Victor was born November 7, 1878, and Lovissa Roos on December 8th, 1879. They attended schools in Sweden and went to the same church.
Victor came to Chicago in 1897, and Lovissa to Minnesota in 1900, on July 4th. Victor visited the Roos family in Minnesota, and three years later he claimed Lovissa as his bride in a ceremony read in Chicago.
The Petersons are very proud of their children: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Peterson and children, May Ellen, Myrtle, Pearl, and Terry, who live in Chicago; a set of twins, Earl and Pearl. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Peterson and son Gilbert live in Palos Park, Ill., and Pearl and her husband, George Borreng and son Allen are residents of Chicago.
The Petersons have ten grandchildren.
The Peterson taught all his children to ski at an early age. He was the first one to ski at 95th and Western, in Chicago, where there is now a ski jump. He made his own skis, and skied to Lowell when he first moved here about 20 years ago.
Until just a few years ago, the Petersons did a lot of swimming. Mrs. Peterson was known by many as the "champion swimmer of the lake." Victor was quite a cut-up, doing handstands, cartwheels, and fancy diving. He taught many children how to swim at the lake.
Victor trapped 89 muskrats and one mink this past year, and he catches many fish during the summer months. Years ago Victor spotted beavers in the creek near the dam.
The Petersons grow strawberries and a vast variety of vegetables during the summer. They are busy the year 'round, with their garden, yard, hunting, trapping, and fishing.
