A former East Chicago Washington high school football player, and a recreational leader at East Chicago's Katherine House, Richard was born in Indiana Harbor on August 7, 1936, and moved to Lowell in December of 1952. He enlisted in the Marine Corps August 18, 1953, and was stationed at the Edenton, North Carolina base. Richard died in Chowan hospital at Edenton from gunshot wounds in his shoulder, inflicted accidentally.
In addition to his mother, Pfc. Pluskis is survived by three brothers, Jerry, Jimmy, and Roy; three sisters, Nancy, Sharon, and Cathy. Also his grandfather John Buxton, all of Lowell; an aunt, Theresa Kirschner of Munster, and an uncle, Glow Snyder of Freemont, Ohio.
A 10 a.m. requiem Mass will be offered at St. Patrick's church in Indiana Harbor, Saturday, April 3rd. Interment will be in the Elmwood cemetery, Hammond, in charge of the McGuan Mortuary, 3438 Fir Street, Indiana Harbor.
