Mr. Shipman was killed Wednesday forenoon when struck by a crane while working at the Graver Tank Company's plant in East Chicago. He was rushed to St. Catherine's hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Shipman was the third man to lose his life in East Chicago industrial accidents this month.
Last week, there was one fatality in the Youngstown Sheet and Tube plant, and another worker lost his life in an accident at Inland.
A veteran of World War I, Shipman is survived by his wife, one son, Robert J. Jr., of West Lafayette, a student at Purdue University; two daughters, Jean Alice and Joyce Ann, both at home. Also, his father, Frank Shipman of Lincoln, Ind., several brothers and sisters, as well as other relatives and many friends.
Rev. Wendell Johnston will officiate at funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Community Bible Church near Cook. Interment will be in Lowell cemetery.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Weaver funeral home this evening, where he lies in state.
Note that in other articles the son is listed as Robert Francis Shipman, Jr., rather than Robert J. Shipman.
