This Lowell Tribune article was found in the June 7, 1945, issue (page 2, column 1):
The William Smiths have received a letter from their son, Pfc. Guy Smith, who is with the U.S. forces in Italy. He says they are now stationed in the mountainous part of the country and it is a very pleasant place. They were in the lowlands for some time during the fighting, and in addition to fighting, the climate was very disagreeable.
