George "Oscar" Weddle, recent Air Force enlistee, sends his address and the news to The Tribune that it's very hot in Texas. With him during his basic training is Pat Sharkey. The two boys, both of whom graduated from L.H.S. with the class of '52, enlisted together. "Oscar's" address is: George B. Weddle, Squad 3723, Flight 1012, Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas.
This October 9, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
Weddle and Sharkey Complete Air Force Basic Training
Lackland Air Force Base, Texas - George B. Weddle, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Weddle, and Patrick E. Sharkey, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Sharkey of Lowell, who were graduated from Lowell high school last spring, are completing their Air Force basic airman indoctrination course at Lackland Air Force Base, the "Gateway to the Air Force".
Lackland, situated near San Antonio, is the world's largest air force base, site of Air Force basic training, for men and women, headquarters of the Human Resource Research Center, and home of the Air Force's Officer's Candidate School.
Their basic training is preparing them for entrance into Air Force technical training and for assignment in specialized work. The course includes a scientific evaluation of their aptitude and inclination for following a particular vocation and career.
The following Oct. 16, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 5, column 4:
Stationed so far away for basic training, George will appreciate letters from home friends. So the Tribune passes on the address to which we forward his paper: A/B George B. Weddle, A.F. 16419035, Flight 1021, Sqd. 3723, Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas.
This November 27, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 1, column 6:
Thanksgiving Day will have added cheer in the Weddle and Sharkey homes for their sons, George and Pat are expected home. In the Sharkey home, however, the family circle will not be complete for Jim is in Korea and Dick in San Diego, both with the Marine Corps.
The following December 11, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 1:
A/3c George B. Weddle, now stationed at Scott Air Force Base, sends a new address to home friends and for his Tribune, for which he expresses appreciation.
George recently completed basic training at San Antonio, Texas, and has been assigned to radio mechanic's school. This course will be of 36 weeks duration. Address: A 3/c George B. Weddle, AF 16419035, 3317 Stud. Sqd., Box J-22, Scott AFB, Ill.
