This 1876 quarter was counterstamped "O.E. Haskin, Lowell, Ind." on the front side (see above) and "Aug. 20, 1886" on the back (see below). Orlando E. Haskin was Lowell town founder Melvin Halsted's partner at one time, and 1876 (the coin's date) was the country's centennial year. In 1848 the two men built a water-powered saw mill in the area that later become Lowell.
