This index to the names in the Lowell (Indiana) High School yearbooks indicates in which yearbook volume, and on which pages, a name can be found as well as how many photos of the person appear on a particular page. All local names appear, whether they are students, school personnel, advertisers, etc.
When the Lowell High School yearbooks were indexed, name spellings were entered as they appeared on each page. If only a first name or nickname and last initial appeared, however, the name was indexed by the last name if it could be ascertained. When names were misspelled, or if there was a typographical error or a variation in the spelling, which happened quite often, the name appears in this index the way it appeared in the yearbook. Occasionally a person's nickname, instead of his/her first name, appeared in quotation marks in the yearbook. For ease in computer alphabetizing, the quotation marks were omitted in this index.
In some yearbooks, the pages were not numbered. For those books, the pages were counted out by hand. This index indicates the page on which a name or photo can be found, whether the book had page numbers on each page or if the pages were hand counted.
The library has no yearbooks for the years 1918, 1919, and 1920. Whether or not yearbooks were created for those years is unknown. During the Great Depression, yearbooks were not published for the years 1931, 1932, 1933, and 1934. Finally, the library's collection of yearbooks does not include several that were published in the 1980's: 1980, 1981, 1985, 1986, and 1987. At such a time that the library is fortunate enough that someone donates a copy of one of the missing volumes, that year will be included in this index.

This book was not paginated, so the pages were hand counted for this index. Page 46 is a photo of the Round Table Society. Page 47 is a photo of the L.H.S.A.A. office holders (4 boys). Because page 47 starts mid-sentence, it would seem there should be a page between these two pages, even though no page has been removed from the book.
The 1941 yearbook was unpaged. Unfortunately, one copy at the library has one page that appears twice in the book (front and back). [NOTE: Not all the yearbooks had this duplicated page, but since we had to hand count pages, we added the reprinted pages to the count.] In addition, a page was removed from that particular yearbook following the information on the LHS Science Club and before the information on the LHS Latin Club. A donated yearbook without these problems has been acquired, so we have used this book to hand count the pages for the index.
In the 1942 yearbook, which included page numbers on most pages, there are two "page 29's." The first page contained photos. This page was not numbered, but followed page 28. The second "page 29," which contained text, was actually numbered in the yearbook. It followed the photo page. Both pages are labeled as page "29" in this index.
A loose supplement page was folded in the book. For the purposes of this index, the numbers on that page were listed as "i" (the front) and "ii" (the back). The chronological events of the school year were included on pages 109 through 112. The book was bound with pages 111 and 112 in reverse order.
Pages 11/12, 105/106, and 161/162 were removed from this book. Pages 55/56, 57/58, and 115/116 were also removed, but have been replaced with photocopies. Also, many of the names under the senior photos do not match the pictures.
