This April 8, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 3:
Miss Olga Holbeck of Bicknell, Ind., and James Combs were married at Crown Point last Saturday. They are spending their honeymoon with relatives in Bicknell. Jim will soon take his physical examination for army service.
James A. Combs of Lowell was listed in an April 22, 1943, Lowell Tribune article (page 1, column 3) as having completed a seven day furlough following induction.
The following November 9, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Home From Overseas
James Combs., R.O.M., is home on leave after serving with the U.S. navy the past year in the Mediterranean war theater. Jim's ship was one of the convoy which aided in landing U.S. soldiers on the Anzio beachhead. Together with his wife, he is visiting his sister, Mrs. Edna Taylor, and husband here, and other relatives in Hammond.
This March 8, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
James A. Combs, R.O.M. 2/c, who is attending school in Chicago, was here last Sunday for a short visit with his sister, Mrs. John A. Taylor and husband. Accompanied by his wife, they had been to Crown Point to visit his mother, Mrs. Wm. Combs., Sr., who is a patient at the Parramore hospital.
This October 25, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 3:
James Combs, who has been discharged from the navy, accompanied by his wife, arrived here this week, where they will reside.
This December 27, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
Members of the William Combs family enjoyed their Christmas at the home of their son and brother, James Combs, and wife last Sunday. This is the first time the family has all been together for five years. Ralph and Jim have just been discharged from the service, and Tom was home on furlough. It was a most joyous day for the entire family.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the May 9, 1946, issue (page 6, columns 4-6):
Lowell's snappy all-World War II ceremonial team from Post 101, pictured above, with Congressional Medal of Honor winner Kenneth Duncan acting as Sgt.-at-Arms, will officiate at initiation ceremonies next Wednesday evening at Bendix Aviation Post 284, South Bend. The mass initiation ceremony will be held in the huge John Adams high school gymnasium, which has a seating capacity of 3,000.
The popularity of the Lowell team, the only one in the entire state composed entirely of World War II vets, has been increasing steadily since its formation a few months ago. Thus far they have initiared 493 new members into Posts at Hammond, Gary, Hobart, Rochester and Lake Village. This figure includes many boys initiated into their own Post.
The team has been scheduled for work at Crown Point and Cedar Lake in the near future and will undoubtedly be in demand at Legion Posts throughout the state in the coming months.
