In recognition of his leadership in the class of engineer specialists, Pvt. Gaither has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement by Brig. Gen. Albert C. Lieber, training center commander. "The singular honor is a distinction that reveals hard study and earnest application and preparedness toward making his most effective contribution to the corps of engineers and the armed forces. A statement of his success will be placed in his permanent record and used as evidence of his future promise in the service," writes his commander to his parents.
Arthur graduated from Lowell high school in 1948 and prior to entering the service he was attending engineering school at Purdue Center in Hammond while employed at Inland Steel in East Chicago. Following a 14-day furlough spent with his parents and wife, Betty, who resides in Crown Point, Arthur left Friday for Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, enroute to the Caribbean Sea area.
