This February 17, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Letters have been received by the Bert Shipleys from their sons, both of whom are serving overseas.
Sgt. Ben Shipley is in England, and his brother, Bert Shipley, is stationed in Italy, Both boys are bakers, turning out bread and pastries to feed Uncle Sam's fighting men. Sgt. Bert is also in charge of a civilian bakery where the Italian civilians get baked goods. Both boys were well when they wrote.
This July 13, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Received Word from Sons
Word received by their parents from S/Sgt. Ben Shipley and Sgt. Fremont Shipley, state that both of them are well getting along fine. Fremont, in Italy, says there still is plenty of fighting going on all the time. Ben, in England, says the boys are just waiting [for] the time when they will go to France to do their bit in the big invasion battles.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the April 26, 1945, issue (page 4, column 1):
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shipley have received letters from their two sons overseas, both of whom are well and getting along fine in the service.
The letter from Sgt. Roy, who is stationed with the U.S. army in Italy, was the first the parents had received from him in 5 months. Their other son, S/Sgt. Ben, is stationed at an airfield near London, where he is with the airforce ground crew.
This September 13, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Camp Atterbury, Ind. -- Staff Sergeant Benjamin D. Shipley, son of Bert Shipley, rural route 2, Lowell, has been honorably discharged from the AAF at the Separation Center here.
Sgt. Shipley's last station of duty was at Foster Field, Texas. He has a record of more than two years service in the European theatre of operations. He has received the Citation Badge, ETO ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and seven battle stars.
Before entering the service Sgt. Shipley worked for the Socony Vacuum Oil Company, East Chicago, and says he expects to return to his former business connection.
A September 20 , 1945, Lowell Tribune article (page 4, column 3) listed Benjamin Shipley as having been recently discharged from the service.
The following obituary is from the June 12, 2001, Lowell Tribune on page 15, column 2:
Benjamin D. Shipley, age 86, of Monticello, formerly of Lowell, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2001. He is survived by: one son, John (Jane) Shipley of Lowell; one daughter, Marilyn (Gary) Popplewell; of Monticello; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Lipton of Crown Point and Nina Corts of Venice, Florida; and several neices and nephews. He was preceded in dearh by his wife, Catherine Shipley. Cremation took place at Heritage Crematory in Portage. Following visitation at 10:00 a.m., a Memorial Service was held at 11:00 a.m. June 9 at Sheets Funeral Home in Lowell with Colfax Masonic Lodge #378 of Lowell officiating. Benjamin Shipley was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a brother of Colfax Masonic Blue Lodge #378 in Lowell for over 50 years, and a former member of the VFW Post in Monicello.
