In a May 25, 1944, Lowell Tribune article (page 1, column 2), Eugene W. Black, formerly from Lowell, but now of Gary, was listed as an Army volunteer and a father. Another article from the same issue of the paper (page 2, columns 1-2) added the following:
Transferred to Ft. Riley, Kansas
Pvt. Eugene Black, Pvt. Lloyd Hathaway and Pvt. Victor Love, who entered the armed forces last week, have been transferred to Ft. Riley, Kansas, for their basic training.
The following July 20, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 3:
Mrs. Eugene Black left Thursday for Ft. Riley, Kansas, where she will spend a few days with her husband.
This August 3, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was on page 4, column 2:
Mrs. Eugene Black has returned from a visit with her husband, who is stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.
The following September 28, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Pvt. Eugene Black, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, spent a 3-day furlough here with his wife and children and his parents, the Louie Blacks.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 18, 1945, issue (page 1, column 3):
Pvt. Eugene Black was home several days last week on an emergency furlough because of the illness of his wife. Mrs. Black is now somewhat improved and he has returned to his base at Fort Meade, Maryland.
This March 8, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Pvt. Eugene Black arrived home from Ft. Meade, Md., last Saturday for a several days visit with his family and his parents, the Louie Blacks. Gene expects to leave for overseas dury soon.
