Harriet DeWitt Buckley (1835-1904)

Harriet Dewitt, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Dewitt, was born in Ontario county, New York, February 10, 1835, and died at her home in Lowell February 23, 1904, at the age of 69 years and 13 days. In 1841 she removed with her parents to Lake county, settling a few miles east of Lowell. For more than sixty years she has resided in this vicinity, knowing and undergoing all the privations and hardships of a pioneer.

December 24, 1861, she was united in marriage with John Buckley. To this union five children were born -- two of which preceded their mother to the Spirit World. At an early age she was converted to Christ and allying herself with the Methodist church organization has been an active worker in the cause of her Lord and Master all these years.

Her funeral occurred from the M.E. church, Lowell, Thursday at 10 a.m. Rev. D.D. Hoagland, her pastor, conducted the funeral service. The M.E. church choir furnished the music. Funeral Director John Castle had charge of the burial services. The following acted as pall bearers: E.S. Clark, W.E. Stewart, G.S. Clark, H.H. Purdy, Charles Castle and H.H. Ragon. Interment in the Lowell Cemetery.

She leaves her husband, three children -- Mrs. Peter J. Miller, Mrs. Orrin Thomas and Charles, all of Lowell, two brothers, Lyman, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Orrin of Shelby, together with a large number of relatives to mourn her to whom the TRIBUNE extends sincere sympathy in this their dark hour of sorrow.

Weep not that her toils are over,
Weep not that her race is run;
God grant we may rest as calmly
When our work, like hers, is done.

Till then we yield with gladness,
Our Mother to him to keep,
And rejoice in the sweet assurance,
"He giveth his loved ones sleep."
