The following unidentified newspaper article (ca. the early 1900's) was found in a scrapbook owned by Betty Burton of Lowell:
BADLY HURT
Last Saturday Silas A. Doty and several others were raising a hay derrick when it toppled over. Mr. Doty started to run out of danger but tripped and fell; his head lighting on a log. Before he could get up, the swing pole of the derrick came down, catching his head between it and the log and severely injuring him. It struck him just above the ear and on the jaw, causing the blood to gush from his ear. Dr. Davis was sent for and at first he was of the opinion from the profuse bleeding that the inner part of the skull was broken and that serious results might follow. As nothing of a serious nature has yet developed, the bleeding was probably caused by a rupture of some of the blood vessels. Mr. Doty is getting along nicely and it is hoped will soon be out again. It was a pretty close call.
