When a small boy his parents moved to a farm near Sherburnville where the greater part of his life was spent. His early schooling was had at an academy at St. John, Ind. He then took up farming as his life work and continued to live on the farm until he retired in 1905 when he moved to Momence where he has since resided. On March 4, 1873, he was married to Miss Sarah E. Smith to which union four children were born, three of whom survive him. They are Mrs. Charles Chappell and Irving Grimes of Yellow head township and Mrs. C.C. Bukowski, who resided with him since the death of Mrs. Grimes which occurred on September 27, 1912. He also leaves one brother, John Grimes of near Sherburnville, and four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Spalding, of Crown Point, Mrs. Edward Rohr, of Villa Park, Ill., Mrs. W.S. Hewitt, of Rosemary, Canada, and Mrs. Mahlon Hathaway, of Roanoke, Ind., also four grand children, one great grand child and many other near relatives.
Mr. Grimes enjoyed a wide acquaintance throughout the eastern part of this county and in Lake county, Indiana. He was known as being honest and upright in all his dealings with those with whom he came in contact, and his friends were legion.
Short funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 on Monday afternoon after which the remains were conveyed to Sherburnville where funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.F. Roe, pastor of the M.E. church, of Momence, with burial in the family lot in the cemetery adjoining the church. The services were largely attended by many who had known him all their lives as a splendid neighbor, a kind and indulgent father.
