He was married to Rachel Dodge March* 3, 1859. To this union eight children were born. Two of his children preceded him to the Spirit World.
His health was not good for some time and on July 20th last he was taken very bad; gradually failing until the end came, when he passed peacefully away. All through his long sickness he was very patient; everything seeming to him to be all right; never uttering a complaint.
He was one of our best citizens; being very highly respected by all who knew him and will be greatly missed not only by his immediate family but by his numerous friends and neighbors. In his death our community has lost an honest man and good citizen and obliging neighbor and his family a loving husband and kind and indulgent father.
His children are all married; three of them, Jesse, Mrs. E.N. Hayhurst and Mrs. J.W. Diss, live near Lowell, Mrs. W.R. Beeman, near Monticello, Ind., Robert, at Providence Forge, Va., and Alva, at Roanoke, Ind.
A short service was held at his late home at 12 m. today (Thursday); after which the remains were taken to the M.E. church at Sherburnville, Ill., where regular funeral services were held; Rev. C.L. McKim officiating. Funeral director C.E. Binyon had charge of the burial services. Interment in the Sherburnville Cemetery.
He leaves his wife, six children, twenty-one grandchildren, five brothers and two sisters and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his departure to that better land to whom we extend sincere sympathy in this their hour of sore affliction.
* NOTE -- Although John K. Hayden's obituary lists his wedding date as Mar. 3, 1859, his wife's obituary lists it as Nov. 3, 1859.
