According to an Internet database of Illinois veterans of the Civil War, Richard Hill was listed in Company D of the 42nd Illinois Infantry. His residence at the time of enlistment was listed as Lowell.

Obituary
Richard M. Hill was born at Pleasant Grove, Indiana, April 21, 1842, and died at his home in Lowell, Indiana, of a complication of diseases, August 31, 1897, at the age of 55 years. 4 months and 20 days. November 28, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Lociena R. Clark. To this union four children were born, viz:--Clifford, Mrs. Ed Crook, of West Pullman, Ill., Harry and Vera. All are living. When the civil war broke out he was one of the first to enroll himself under the Union banner, serving about four years in Co. D, 42nd Ill. Inf. In business he was active and industrious, and in this way he accumulated a fine property leaving his family in comfortable circumstances. Having always lived among us he will be greatly missed by his many friends and neighbors. He leaves a wife, four children, several brothers and sisters together with many friends and neighbors to mourn his departure. His funeral, which was attended by Burnham Post G.A.R. and Colfax lodge A.F. & A.M., took place from the M.E. church, Lowell, today at one o'clock p.m., Rev. E.P. Bennett, officiating. Interment in Lowell cemetery. We extend to the bereaved relatives and friends our warmest sympathy in this their dark hour of affliction.
