A telephone call from their son, John, from Washington, D.C., informed his parents, the Jacob Hoffmans Sunday evening, that he was going into service Thursday. He enlisted in navy. John has been in Washington the past five years, where he has been a member of the park police.
This October 26, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 4, column 2:
Graduated from Gunnery School
A call from John Hoffman to his parents, the Jacob Hoffmans, informs them that he graduated from gunnery school at Norfolk, Va., on Oct. 21st, and is now in Brooklyn, N.Y., awaiting assignment to a ship. John enlisted and left July 7, having been on the Park police force in Washington, D.C. for the past five years.
This May 17, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
A letter from John L. Hoffman, S 1/c, written April 22, says they were landing somewhere in Europe that day. John is in the armed guard in the navy. This is his fourth crossing since Jan. 1.
This June 28, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 6:
John Hoffman, S 1/c, and family, are here visiting his parents, the Jacob Hoffmans. John, an armed guard on a merchant ship will enter a navy hospital for medical treatment when his leave expires, and then will be assigned to another ship.
This July 19, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 3:
John Hoffman, S 1/c and family, left last week for Pennsylvania to visit Mrs. Hoffman's relatives. John left for New York Saturday, where he reported for hospitalization, after which he will be assigned to duty again.
This November 1, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 4:
Mr. and Mrs. Jake Hoffman, Mrs. Irma Black, and the Hoffmans' daughter, Mrs. Elman Atwood, of Hammond, enjoyed a short visit with S 1/c John Hoffman in Chicago Sunday. John was enroute to the west coast with his outfit.
This December 13, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
John Hoffman, S 1/c, arrived in Chicago Monday, where he was called by the serious illness of his mother, Mrs. Jacob Hoffman, whose condition since suffering a cerebral hemorrhage last week, is a little better. The Hoffman's other son, Cpl. Robert, is on his way home from Manila.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 10, 1946, issue (page 8, column 4 ):
S 1/c John Hoffman, who is now stationed at Shoemaker, Calif., writes his parents, the Jacob Hoffmans, that he enjoyed a week-end visit with Marshall Sanger, a former Lowell man, and wife at their home in Stockton, Calif. John said that he and "Peg" put in the time talking over matters concerning the old home town.
