The Lowell Star, Aug. 17, 1872, page 5, column 3, had a list of soldiers who were supporters of Grant in that election. Among them was William Mudge of the 9th Ill. Cav. According to a database on Illinois veterans of the Civil War, he was in Company H and resided in Chicago at the time of his enlistment. Sometimes, however, the "residence" is misleading, as often the man signed up in a city, but did not live there.
