GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
A most charming society event took place yesterday when Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Phillips entertained a large company of invited friends and relatives at their pleasant residence, 28 Morton court. They entertained in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary, which occurred yesterday. The celebration was one of the most delightful society functions of the late summer and was attended by almost one hundred friends and relatives from Hammond and from a distance. The guests began to arrive in Hammond early in the week and have been pleasantly entertained at their home until yesterday when the event was appropriately decorated with garlands of green and gold crepe paper, which had been draped from the chandeliers to the four corners of the room. In the parlors were tall vases of cut flowers, roses and carnations attractively arranged with ferns. The banquet hall was also prettily decorated for the occasion in the same color scheme. Green and gold were the prevailing colors and the room was draped with ropes of ferns and smilax. Bowls of golden rod were used on the tables and other souvenirs added to the attractiveness of the room. The guests were served with an elaborate course dinner at 1 o'clock. There was one long table and several smaller ones where the young people of the party were served. Several hours were spent at the banquet table and the guests then went to the parlors where they spent the remainder of the day with pleasant social diversions. Conversation and music were features of the afternoon until 6 o'clock when the guests were again served with a dainty luncheon. During the evening the guests visited on the large lawn and the children of the neighborhood gathered together and gave a chariverle in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Phillips. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips received letters and cards of congratulations from their friends and relatives and many very valuable gifts. They received a handsome solid silver serving set, many individual pieces of silver, souvenir spoons, meat and salad forks, pieces of hand painted china, a gold clock, a golden oak rocking chair and numerous bunches of flowers. They also received 60 dollars of gold pieces. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were married at the bride's home just three miles from Merrillville and Squire Alvin Green was the officiating clergyman. Mrs. Phillips was formerly Miss Martha Thompson, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Thompson, prominent citizens in the county. For a few years after their marriage they lived on a farm near Merrillville, but came to Hammond thirty-three years ago, and have made their home here ever since. Mr. Phillips has been retired from business for several years and they have made their home at 28 Morton court. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips have a wide acquaintance of friends in Hammond and vicinity who will extend best wishes and congratulations.
