As a small boy he moved with his parents to Chicago, and later to West Creek township, near Lowell, Indiana.
In the years 1861 he enlisted in the Civil war, in Co. F, 9th Illinois Vol. Cavalry, serving four years and four months. He was the last soldier of the G.A.R. Post of Milford.
In December 1866 he was united in marriage to Mary Martha Deedric and to this union six children were born, two of whom died in infancy, and Jacob G., who died in 1895. His wife died December 2, 1880, and he was then married to Ernstena Conrad, and they moved to Milford in 1882, his wife dying in 1907.
He is survived by three children, Mrs. Henry Sylvester, Joshua and Abraham, one step-daughter, Mrs. Ben Nitsche, of Cedar Lake, Ind., three sisters, Lizzie Riebe, of Boise, Idaho, Mary Trier, of Zion City, Ill., and Margaret Henke, of Charles City, Iowa. These with fifteen grand-children, five step-grand-children, fifteen great-grand-children and a host of friends mourn his departure. He retired from farming in 1912 and made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Henry Sylvester, until the time of his death.
He was a devoted father, a kind neighbor and a true friend, always ready to administer help to the needy.
As a lad of twelve he was converted and became a true follower of Christ. Since a young man he has been working for his Master as a minister, winning souls to Christ. He [w]as a faithful member of the Methodist church and waited patiently for his Master to call him, and now that his faithful service is ended he has gone to be with his Saviour in peace for which he has so long waited.
