The Lowell Star, Aug. 17, 2001, 1872, page 5, column 3, had a list of soldiers who were supporters of Grant in that election. Among them was Stephen Shirley of the 99th Ind.

Obituary
Mr. Stephen W. Shirley was born in Warren, Warren county, Pennsylvania, in 1832. He lived there until the age of 14, then he came to Hebron, Indiana, with his sister Mrs. George Allen. At the age of twenty-two he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Allen of Boone Grove, Porter county, Indiana. To this union twelve children were born--eleven girls and one boy; ten of them are now living. He spent the earlier part of his life in Lowell and in 1894 moved to Engelwood Illinois, where he lived until the day of his death. At the breaking out of the late war he enlisted in Co. A 99th Ind. Inf. and served faithfully for three years and received no wounds but suffered a severe sunstroke which compelled him to retire from active service for some time.
For four long and weary weeks he was a patient sufferer and everything possible was done to lighten the suffering incidental to his approaching dissolution. His last words were "Tell the children not to weep, I am ready to go," and he closed his eyes in sweet rest. Although not a member of the church he was what the world call a strictly moral man, always set a good example, and was ever ready to lend a helping hand. He died at 9:00 p.m., Monday, January 27th, 1895, of Bright's disease. The funeral took place at the Christian church on Wednesday 29th inst., Rev. J.L. Worley officiating.
Burnham Post G.A.R., of which he was a worthy member, to the number of fifty followed the remains to the Lowell cemetery where the beautiful ceremony of the order was performed, after which the body was lowered to its last resting place, there to rest until the "assembly" shall call him forth to a newness of life. May he rest in peace.
