John E. Stowell (1826-1902)

Myron Stowell had three brothers who also served during the Civil War. They were John, Lewis, and Marcus. I think a couple of them enlisted at Kankakee. John lived at Lowell and Lewis lived at Water Valley. Marcus moved to Kansas shortly after the Civil War.

Their father, Loren Lorenzo Stowell served during the War of 1812, probably from Connecticut or New York. Loren moved to Shelby, Indiana from Kalamazoo, Michigan, after the death of his wife in 1846. Loren was born at Stafford, Connecticut, the son of Dr. Oliver Stowell of Pomfret, Connecticut and Abigail Strickland of New London, and married Mary Matilda Reed, a daughter of Talcott Reed. He was married three different times. By the second marriage he had a son, Stewart Stowell, who lived at Shelby.

Loren died in 1872 and his obit can be found in the Lowell Tribune.

JOHN E. STOWELL

John E. Stowell was born in Huron county, Ohio, June 13, 1826, and died in Shelby, Indiana, Dec. 10, 1902, and was married ro Rhuey Shumway, of Porter county, Ind., in 1850. This marriage was blessed with six children, three girls and three boys, five of whom are living, one boy dying in infancy. Mr. Stowell's mother died when he was but a lad. After her death he went to live with Hale Bates until his marriage. In 1859 he moved to Lake county, where he has since lived. Aug. 16, 1862, he enlisted in Co. A, 73d Ind. Inf., and served until the close of the war. Aug. 14, 1882, his wife died. In 1885 he united in marriage to Mrs. Ruth Gragg. After her death he married Mrs. Eliza A. Doolan, who preceeded him to the spirit world Sept. 16, 1902. On Nov. 9 last he united with the Christian Church at Shelby under the pastorage of Rev. Appleton. He was among our most honorable and upright citizens, and left many friends to mourn his loss. He leaves five children--Homer Stowell and Alice, wife of Wm. Sanders of Lowell; Addie, wife of Mat Cross, of Shelby; Frank Stowell, of Chicago Heights; Hattie, wife of Samuel McDonald, of Hardman, Ore. A large circle of friends join with them in sorrow at their loss. The funeral took place from the Christian church of Lowell at 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon, Rev. Hoadgland preaching the sermon. The Grand Army attended in a body. The remains were laid to rest by the side of his first wife in the Lowell cemetery.
