William F. Tuthill (1811-1893)

The following article was found in the June 8, 1872, Lowell Star on page 5, column 4:

Wm. F. Tuthill, Esq., spread before us the other day, his little cabinet of curiosities which he gathered while taking a trip last fall to Washington Territory. In fact, it was quite a mineralogical and geological display of western mementos. There was a specimen of the stone, or almost augite, which is used as material for the far-famed Mormon temple; igneous specimens of volcanic origin from the Rocky mountains; pebbles from the Pacific shore and the foaming waters of the Walla Walla; wheat, both winter and spring, from the fertile valleys of Oregon; and various woods peculiar to the mountain and hill sides of Washington Territory. In short, Mr. T. has a score of mementos that we cannot mention. He also presented an array of Chinese names the orthography of which it is not appropriate to lay before the reader now, as they are not "Dolly Varden" in musical euphony.

At least one Tuthill (Tuttle) family existed in the Lake and Porter County areas during the Civil War era and after, but not all the relationships of the people have been positively connected. The following information comes from Roestta Hotler of Lowell:

William F. Tuthill was born September 07, 1811, and died November 22, 1893, in Lowell, Lake Co., IN. Burial: about November 23, 1893, Lowell Memorial Cemetery, Lowell, Lake Co., IN. He married Emiline C. Tuthill. She was born July 02, 1820, and died June 09, 1889, in Lowell, Lake Co., IN. Burial in Lowell Memorial Cemetery, Lowell, Lake Co., IN.
