His father, Ernest VanAlstine, who resides at Grant Park, Ill., is very well known here.
Oakes was a member of the Lake Prairie Presbyterian church.
Lowell relatives who attended memorial services held Friday at the Miller Funeral Home in Monticello were Mr. and Mrs. Jodie Hayden, Mrs. Edith Pulver, Miss Jessie Pulver, Mrs. Frank Phebus and the Emerson and Paul Phebus families.
Oakes, an Army veteran of World War I, was born April 19, 1894. He attended Purdue where he played varsity basketball and was a member of Sigma Chi. He was in business at Monticello from 1925 to 1935. He married Jane VanBuskirk of Medaryville in 1941 and they moved to California.
He was a past master of Libanus Lodge No. 154, F. and A.M., a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite, also a member of the Good Fellows club and past commander of the Legion Post at Monticello.
Surviving with his wife and father is a sister, Mrs. Sula Phebus of Grant Park, Ill., and other relatives of the Lowell community.
