This photo came from Phyllis Ewer Gibbs, who writes:
"I have a lot of photos that I think are from the William Wheeler and Surprise families. Mrs. Wheeler was a Surprise. Some of them I can identify but many of them I cannot. . . . They are pictures that another aunt, Ruth Banser, had."
Town Historian Richard Schmal identified the people in the picture as follows:
"I remembered seeing the older lady in the left background in an old scrapbook in my so called 'archives.' She is Lola M. Ragon Surprise. I would assume that the man is her husband Ernest A. Surprise. They are the parents of Charles Lincoln Sr. (1911-1987), who could have been taking the pic. The younger lady in left foreground is Lucille Searle Surprise, wife of Charles. To the right is her son Charles Jr. and Lovisa Surprise Love Jones, who was a dear friend of our family. She lived next door for decades."
Jan Umlauf, direct descendent of Ernest and Lola Surprise, later verified the identification of the people in this photo:
You identified the folk in this photo correctly. That is my grandpa Ernie Surprise and my grandma Lola Ragon Surprise. Lola's name was Lola Montez Ragon.
