The Lowell Star, Aug. 17, 1872, page 5, column 3, had a list of soldiers who were supporters of Grant in that election. Among them was William Nichols of the 138th Ind. Inf.
The following May 16, 1903, Lowell Souvenir article was found on page 3, column 1:
Ran Pratt, Jas. Chitwood, Wm. Nichols and H.H. Ragon attended the state encampment of the G.A.R. held at Anderson on the 12th, 13th and 14th of this week.

Obituary
In the early morning hour of December 4, 1913, William C. Nichols, after months of suffering, passed quietly from earth.
At the time of the war of the Rebellion he enlisted as a private of Thomas G. Lyte, Company C, 138th Regiment of Indiana Infantry. At the expiration of his term of service he was honorably discharged September 22, 1864.
March 26, 1871, he was married to Mary J. Gragg, second daughter of Worling and Sarah (Fellows) Gragg, formerly of Hemlock, New York, who died November 21, 1897. To this union were born two daughters and one son, Mrs. Thomas Grant, Mary E. and William H. Nichols, who were continuously with him [NOTE: The article ends here.]
