ANOTHER VETERAN GONE
James Spalding, well known here, and more especially in the south part of the county, died in Chicago, Feb. 18th, 1914, at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 27 days. He served one term as county assessor.
Mr. Spalding was born in West Creek township, this county, May 19th, 1846, being the fifth one of nine children born to Herman* and Nancy Spalding. He lived on the farm until the war of the rebellion started and then enlisted in Captain John Donch's command, Co. A. 7th Indiana Cavalry, and served until the war ended. After returning he married Margaret Grimes of Shurburnville, Ill., and from their union were born nine children and five of them preceeded him to the other world. He spent the last five years of his life in the real estate business in Chicago. He leaves to mourn one son, three daughters, two brothers, a sister, and a large number of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held in the M.E. church in Lowell, and the burial was in the West Creek Cemetery.
* NOTE -- James Spalding's father's name was actually Heman Spalding, not "Herman."
