Carl Ruley (1900-1955)
The following newspaper article, hand-identified as being from the Sept. 8, 1955, Tribune was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Carl Ruley, 55, WW I Vet, Victim of Heart Attack
Sympathy is extended the family of Carl Ruley, 55, who was stricken with a heart attack while downtown Monday morning, and died very suddenly. All efforts of the fire department inhalator squad to revive him proved futile.A lifetime resident of Lowell, Carl was born here May 7, 1900, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Ruley.
Carl served in France with the Army during World War I, enlisting on December 7, 1917. He was with the 42nd Ambulance Co. at Meuse Argonne offensive from October 27 until Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. He received his discharge June 4, 1919.
Carl returned to Lowell, and on June 12, 1920, he married Miss Alice Jane Powell. They were the parents of one child, Carl Dorsey.
A mason contractor, Carl held membership in the bricklayers union, local No. 6. He was also a member of the Lowell American Legion, Post 101, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, No. 6841.
Surviving with his wife, Alice, and son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dorsey Ruley and three children, are one sister, Mrs. Evon Paulsen of Crown Point; four brothers, Chester, Lyle and Eugene of Lowell, and Elmer of Chicago; also many other relatives, friends and neighbors.
Military memorial services were held at the Sheets Funeral Home November 2, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. E. L. Worley officiating. Comrades of the VFW Post served as pallbearers, and graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion Post.
