The following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    Lowell Man Among Top Dairy Producers

    Five Lake County dairymen will be among the outstanding Hoosier dairy producers to receive awards from the Indiana State Dairy Association at its 65th annual meeting at Purdue University on December 6. These awards are aimed at eliminating costly, low-producing cows from dairy herds.

    Gold Certificate of Merit Herd awards go to Rollin W. Armstrong, Lowell, and Frank Schultz, Hobart. To qualify for a gold award, all cows in the herd must have produced more than 400 pounds of butterfat in the preceding year. Armstrong's herd was top herd in the Lake County Dairy Herd Improvement Association, with an average of 537 pounds fat. The Frank Schultz herd ranked third with a 486 pound average.

    Every cow producing more than 350 pounds of butterfat entitles the owner to a silver award, and 300 pound production earns a bronze award. Bronze awards go to George and Ed Hein, Crown Point; Frank and Kaiser, Hobart; and Seeberger and Fetsch Schererville.

The following article from an unknown source can be found in the Local History Files at Lowell Public Library (LH--Vital Statistics, vol. 3, page 56):
    Rollin M. Armstrong, age 79, of Lowell, passed away Tues, July 21, 1992. He is survived by his wife, Ella Mae Armstrong; one son, Timothy Armstrong of Lowell; two daughters, Sandra (Robert) Schantz of Lowell and Deanne (Daniel) Lucas of Hebron; six grandchildren, Micah, Heidi and Rebecca Schantz, and Elaine 'Nikki,' Jessica and Katelyn Lucas; two brothers, Denzel (Emily) Armstrong of Lowell and Dean (Patricia) Armstrong of Hebron, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. July 25 at the Lowell Church of Christ, with Pastor Charles Hochmuth officiating. Interment followed at West Creek Cemetery in Lowell. Rollin Armstrong was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Woodford County, Ill., and was married Apr. 12, 1936, to Ella Mae Hayden. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Rollin Armstrong was a deacon at the Lowell Church of Christ. A retired farmer, he was also a retired school bus driver for the Tri-Creek School Corp. and a retired custodian for the Lowell Middle School. Arrangements were handled by Sheets Funeral Home in Lowell.

Note -- The middle initial of Mr. Armstong's name shows as both "M" and as "W" in various articles.
