Rollin Armstrong (1912-1992)
Lowell Man Among Top Dairy Producers
Five Lake County dairymen will be among the outstanding Hoosier dairy producers to receive awards from the Indiana State Dairy Association at its 65th annual meeting at Purdue University on December 6. These awards are aimed at eliminating costly, low-producing cows from dairy herds.Gold Certificate of Merit Herd awards go to Rollin W. Armstrong, Lowell, and Frank Schultz, Hobart. To qualify for a gold award, all cows in the herd must have produced more than 400 pounds of butterfat in the preceding year. Armstrong's herd was top herd in the Lake County Dairy Herd Improvement Association, with an average of 537 pounds fat. The Frank Schultz herd ranked third with a 486 pound average.
Every cow producing more than 350 pounds of butterfat entitles the owner to a silver award, and 300 pound production earns a bronze award. Bronze awards go to George and Ed Hein, Crown Point; Frank and Kaiser, Hobart; and Seeberger and Fetsch Schererville.
