A letter from Lyle Richard "Dick" Williams, who was serving in China, was published in the February 3, 1944, issue of the Lowell Tribune (page 2, column 2). The following excerpt mentions Robert Vandre:
    "I guess I wrote you when we moved here that Bob Vandre was staying in India. I hope we will have a chance to go home together when the time comes."

The following August 31, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:

    Visit Old Home Town

    Sgt. Robert Vandre, who has just returned from over two years service in India and China, accompanied by his sisters, Leona and Helen, and brother Kenneth, of Kokomo, and Miss Evelyn Cross of California, visited friends here at the Vandres former home, Monday.
