Charles DeWitt (1822-1894)

The following undated, unidentified newspaper article was found in a copy of Helen Craft's Scrapbook at the Lowell Public Library:

Chas. DeWitt was born in Steuben Co., N.Y., Jan. 26, 1822, was the eldest of ten children, removed to Lake Co., Ind. in 1845, was married to Marietta Sanger in 1849, she died in 1851. He was married to Anna Pratt June 6, 1851.* To them were born four children, one son and three daughters, two of whom are now living. He died Sept, 13, 1894, aged 72 years, 7 mo., 17 days. He leaves a wife, two daughters, five grandchildren, three brothers, and two sisters to mourn his loss. Funeral services held at the M.E. church Sat., Sept. 15, conducted by Rev. Bennett, assisted by Rev. Hootman.

* NOTE -- Anna Pratt DeWitt's obituary lists June 5, 1853, as their wedding date.
