JESSE HAYDEN ELECTED MAYOR OF MOMENCE
Jesse Hayden, a former resident, was elected Mayor of Momence in a spirited election Tuesday. He headed the Citizen's Progressive ticket and carried the balance of the ticket into office with the exception of one candidate. His many Lowell friends congratulate him on his election.The following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Final Rites Today for J.B. Hayden
Jesse B. Hayden, 81, resident of Momence, Ill., died Tuesday, January 11, at St. Mary's hospital, Kankakee, Ill., following a brief illness.Born in Kankakee County, October 18, 1873, Jesse came to the Lowell community with his parents, John and Rachael Dodge Hayden, when a youngster, and Lowell was his hometown for most of his lifetime. He farmed extensively, west of Lowell, until he retired in 1928 and moved to Momence.
He served as Mayor of Momence for eight years, and always retained an active interest in civic affairs as well as the Momence Methodist church.
He married Jennie Sanders of Lowell, and they were the parents of two sons, Mildren and Murray. After the death of his wife, he married Carrie Garrison of Lowell, who also preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons, Mildren of Lowell and Murray of Merrillville; one sister, Mrs. Ella Diss of near Fort Wayne; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends here and at Momence.
Memorial services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the Sheets Funeral Home, with Rev. E.L. Worley officiating. Burial will be in the West Creek cemetery.
