Rachel S. Straw Hughes (1838-1927)

- Rachel S. Hughes, daughter of Joel and Mary Straw, was born in Wyandotte county, Ohio, May 28, 1838, and departed this life January 5, 1927, at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 6 days.
On January 10, 1860, she was united in marriage to Thomas Hughes, who some time later moved from Ohio to Indiana and became one of the pioneer settlers of Eagle Creek township, Lake county.
Here they remained until 1893, when they moved with their family to Crown Point and a little later to Kansas. After a lapse of seven years, Mrs. Hughes with her family again established a home on South Main street at Crown Point. After ten years residence in that city the deceased moved to Chicago to be with her children who had given her loving care as her years advanced to near four score and ten.
The deceased was a most lovable type of womanhood, always patient through sunshine and storm, and her kindly traits and gentleness to all mankind will stand out prominently as her reward for a long and well spent life. Her keen intellect and motherly character benefitted every life she touched.
She leaves to mourn her loss, six daughters and one son -- Mrs. Geo. Gidley, of Hebron; Mrs. S.A. Brownell, of Lowell; Mrs. Sale Morrow, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Fred Y. Wheeler, of Crown Point; Amanda, Elizabeth and Joe, who have resided with their mother in Chicago, and a host of kind and loving friends.
Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Gidley, at Hebron Friday at 2 p.m. Interment was made in the Hebron cemetery.
