Abby Maxwell (1867-1928)

Abby Maxwell (1867-1928)

A copy of the following July 12, 1928, Lowell Tribune obituary newspaper appeared on page 4, cloumn 2:
Abby Maxwell, daughter of Johnson R. and Mary Maxwell, was born August 20, 1867 in West Creek Township, and fell asleep at her home in Lowell on the morning of July 5, 1928, at the age of 59.

In early life, she became a member of the Methodist church and after moving to Lowell continued to worship and serve in the church there.

Her entire life was spent for others. When her oldest brother's wife died, leaving Floyd, a baby of six weeks, it was she who took him and his brother Gilbert, making a home for them and taking the place of a mother until they were grown.

After the death of her father, she stayed with her mother and cared for her during her declining years. After this she spent part of her time with her youngest sister, helping to care for her during her last illness. Truly hers was a life of service and now her Master has said, "Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

Though her health had been falling for more than four years, and she had been confined to her bed for six months, she bore her affliction without complaining and with patience until the end.

She leaves to mourn her going, besides the sister and brother, ten nieces and nephews, and many friends.

      Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me,
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
      Turns again home.

      Twilight and evening bell
      And after that the dark
And may there be no sadness of farewell
      When I embark.

For though from out our bourne of time and place
The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

Funeral services were conducted at her late home last Saturday at 10 a.m. Rev. V.V. Hackley, pastor of the M.E. church, conducted the services. Interment as made in the family lot in Lake Prairie cemetery in charge of Weaver and Son.
