The following July 12, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:

TWO CHICAGO YOUNGSTERS DROWN NEAR COFFIN'S AT CEDAR LAKE LAST WEEK

Efforts of Lowell and Crown Point Fire Departments to Revive Them of No Avail

Edwina Peterson, nearly two years of age, and George Robert Lawrence, nearly three, were drowned at the south end of Cedar Lake, east of Coffin's Shady Beach, last Thursday, where they were wading in two feet of water about eight feet from shore.

The little ones had accompanied their mothers to the lake only a short time ago, to spend a brief vacation.

The children were left in a play pen near the house, but in some manner managed to loosen the latch and got out, the mothers discovering their absence when they looked to see if they were all right. Search was started at once and when they were not found around nearby cottages they went down to the lake, where their bodies were soon found. An inhalator squad from Lowell Fire Department and a resuscitator squad from the Crown Point department were called, but their efforts to revive the youngsters were to no avail, the bodies having been in the water too long.

Both Mrs. Peterson, whose husband is in the navy, and Mrs. Lawrence, whose husband is recovering from wounds in a government hospital, were prostrated with grief.

The bodies were removed to Crown Point and prepared for burial and then taken to Chicago.
