The following newspaper article, hand-identified as being from the Dec. 2, 1954, Lowell Tribune, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

Cedar Lake Soldier Is Accident Victim

Pvt. Donald Wayne Stalnecker, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edison Stalnecker, who own the Cedar Lake Garage, located on the Lowell-Cedar Lake road, was killed instantly at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday morning, when he was returning home from St. Anne, Ill., where he had gone to say goodbye to relatives. Donald was scheduled to leave tonight (Thursday), for Ft. Lewis, Washington, from where he would sail for Korea. The accident occurred near Judge Strickland's farm just southwest of Lowell.

Donald was accompanied by his brother David, 19, who had returned on Monday from 1 ½ years of service with the U.S. Army in Germany. David is hospitalized at Gary Methodist with injuries feared to be serious. Exact cause of the accident has not been determined.

Donald had attended high school in Crown Point, but was very well known by Lowell's young set. The family are long-time residents of Cedar Lake.

Other members of the immediate family are two sisters, Janice, 13, and Joyce, 15, and two step-brothers and a step-sister, Charles, Ariel, and Claude Wismiller, all of Cedar Lake.

Rev. Willard Leavens, pastor of the Cedar Lake Church of Christ will officiate at military memorial service which will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the Sheets Funeral Home. Interment will be made in the Orchard Grove cemetery.
